Artists
George Gill
During the 1980s his work became more figurative after moving to the country and in the 1990s began taking on commissions for landscapes and portraits. As sales started to increase through annual exhibitions and galleries, he took on fewer commissions in order to concentrate on his own ideas.
In 2000 his work was accepted at the Mall Galleries, London for the first time and exhibited at the annual exhibition of The Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA), The Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI), The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (RI) and the Pastel Society (PS). And he was the first recipient of the John Godden Award for best painting at the Hertford Art Society annual members’ show.
In 2001 George was the winner of the ROI 2001 Exhibition Windsor and Newton Award for outstanding work and is a member of East Anglian Group of Marine Artists, Ipswich Art Society, Hertford Art Society. In 2003 George won the Beecroft Landmark Award for Best Work at the 45th Essex Open Exhibition. In 2004 both submissions were selected for the New English Art Club exhibition t the Mall Galleries in London and in 2006 George was featured in ‘Artists & Illustrators’ magazine Issue 233, Feb 2006.
In the artists own words “to keep pushing at the boundaries of my work, I like to change media from time to time, as this keeps my work fresh and helps to retain the excitement and joy of discovery, like working directly from the subject.”
