Seth Draper Artist

'I make a mixture of sculptures, pictures and automata's inspired by the sea and local coastline that I grew up around. My work is made using driftwood, recycled tin cans and any other bits of flotsam and jetsam that I can find'.

Seth grew up on the East Anglian coast and spent many happy days taking in the delights of the seaside, from crabbing at Walberswick to trawling the local beaches for shells, that elusive piece of amber or maybe a fossil.

Even when studying at Cardiff University, his beachcombing continued. He developed a love for the bits of driftwood with flaky paint and gorgeous rusty patina that washed up on the rocky Welsh coastline. While at University he started to make playful ceramic boats. Over the years he has developed his work in driftwood and tin, even recycled baked bean tins, maybe even a fossil and is carrying on the playful theme in his current coastal inspired artwork

Seth's automata's inspired by real life, may include recycled tin cans, driftwood with flaky paint and other bits and pieces. They delight everyone with their quirky semi-realistic movements which emulate the swimming of a whale, the bobbing of a trawler sailing, fish swimming in the sea or crabs on local beaches. Using recycled tin cans Seth creates amazing shoals of shiny fish on repurposed boat hulls or discarded beach hut driftwood planks.

Seth's work encapsulates his love of the East Anglia coast with a need to highlight the problems of plastic pollution in our oceans. While beachcombing Seth Draper always ensures that he brings home a bag of litter as well as many recycled tin cans!
