Artists Rachel Thomas

Rachel Thomas finds inspiration in the movement and patterns in nature, the changing of seasons and light; she is influenced by new sights, sounds, tastes and colour. A main source of inspiration, these experiences come alive in her paintings.

Rachel, now living in Norfolk, UK, was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire but as a child moved often. The longest spent in one county, until moving to Norfolk, was Oxford for 8 years; even then yearly Romany caravan holidays to Cardiff, Wales influenced Rachel and kept her wanderlust alive. Travelling continued to be a passion for Rachel throughout her teenage years and beyond and remains an influence to this day.

Rachel Thomas studied Surface Pattern and Textile Design at Great Yarmouth College of Art and Design and Batley School of Art, West Yorkshire. She was a finalist in the House and Gardens Young Designer of the Year and went to work in the Kings Road, London as an interior designer. Rachel started painting full time in 1989 after leaving her role in London and moving to Barbados for several months. It was in Barbados that Rachel started to paint and exhibit on a regular basis, inspired by empty beaches and the thrill of climbing a new hill or mountain just to catch a glimpse of what's on the other side.

Rachel produces large evocative semi-abstract canvases, using her own distinctive palette.

Rachel has exhibited regularly since 1989 and her work is held in private collections in Barbados, Canada, America, Holland and South Africa. She has exhibited locally and in London and was the first woman to exhibit art in 'The Palace of Westminster'. Her work has been selected and exhibited by the Royal Society of Marine Artists annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries and the Institute of East Anglian Artists annual exhibition in North Norfolk. She is a trustee for a medical charity, IAMGSD and each year teaches and demonstrates for many art groups throughout East Anglia. She is also a member of the Great Yarmouth Society of Artists.
